ANM Participation in the 20th IGF Annual General Meeting (AGM) – Redefining Mining: Balancing the Need for Minerals with Protecting People and the Planet

Geneva, Switzerland – November 18, 2024 – The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF), a global platform for governments and stakeholders in the mining sector to discuss key issues surrounding mining, sustainable development, and policy frameworks, convened its 20th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Palais des Nations in Geneva. This year’s event centered on the theme "Redefining Mining: Balancing the Need for Minerals with Protecting People and the Planet."

The IGF is The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) supports governments to advance good mining governance for the betterment of communities, economies, and the environment. Helps governments around the globe further gender equality, support livelihoods, manage ecosystems, and optimize social and financial benefits in large and small-scale mining operations.

Earlier this year, the Government of Timor-Leste, through its Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, officially joined the IGF, alongside 82 other member countries.

As a new member of the IGF since February 14, 2024, the Autoridade Nacional dos Minerais was proud to participate in this milestone AGM. This engagement reflects Timor-Leste’s commitment to improving the governance and sustainability of its mining sector.

Previously the IGF facilitated a key workshop in May 2024, organized for the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and the National Minerals Authority of Timor-Leste. The workshop provided insights into strengthening the country's legal and regulatory frameworks for mining, focusing on sustainable practices, good governance, and social responsibility.

ANM commits to work closely with the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals, and Sustainable Development (IGF) to strengthen the mining governance framework and leverage the sector’s potential for inclusive growth.
