Timor-Leste and Australia have a collaborative minerals and mining relationship
12 September 2025

In August, the Australian Government supported a delegation from Autoridade Nacional dos Minerais,I.P. (National Minerals Authority, ANM) to visit Brisbane, Perth and Darwin to meet with Australian counterparts and exchange best practices in mining regulation, safety, and sustainable development.

The delegation met with key Government agencies including the Mining Queensland, Resources Safety & Health Queensland, the Western Australian Department of Local Government, Industry and Regulation and the Fair Work Ombudsman, as well as a range of industry organisations. They learned firsthand about Australia’s integrated approach to:

• Generating skilled mining related employment for the Timorese people

• Proactive mine closure/decommissioning planning

• Attracting responsible investment and revenue sharing

The discussions also covered legacy site rehabilitation, native title and community rights, financial assurance mechanisms, skilled workforce development, and long-term environmental responsibility.

This knowledge exchange was initiated by ANM and facilitated by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, as part of the Timor-Leste – Australia Minerals and Mining Collaboration, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening institutional ties and fostering sustainable development in the sector. It received support from the Australian Government through the Southeast Asia and Australia Government Partnerships program.
